In Mechatronics 405, we were required to design, build and test a model car that ran on an AVR based RTOS. In essence, build a small car with robust control systems that can take commands from a computer and perform routines. This is the conclusion to my project with Tyler Price (Mechanical engineering) and John Gerrity (Biomedical engineering), two really fun engineers.

In the class of ME 405, we were given a circuit board with an Atmega 1281 processor. This processor, while somewhat limited, had enough program space to run a real time operating system uploaded from Atmel Studio. Most of the processor pins were conveniently broken out in .1 inch headers.

One by one, we wrote drivers for every aspect of the system while assembling the corresponding the mechanical parts, until we had a working product: the SS Land Yacht! With its laser cut chassis and “scary fan” booster addition, it stood out among our classmates’ cars. It even won round 1 of the ME 405 drag races!

As far as the distribution of work, I did most of the C programming in freeRTOS for the group. My lab partners did all of the mechanical design aspects, and electronics were evenly split among us. All of us in the group had a fair amount of mechatronics experience before coming into this class, which made things not too overwhelming in this course though still challenging. Overall this class was loads of fun, and I would take it again if I were allowed to.
