Underwater Robotics year 1

So as many of you in my life know, I’m involved in Robotics at Cal Poly. This post is my recap of what happened last year.

It all kind of started by accident one evening in January, at Home Depot. My roommate and I were shopping at Home Depot, and suddenly we ran into a few friends- Shelby, Lisa, and Jesse! Anyways, somehow I decided to join the team, and the rest is history….

Which I will now tell you about.

By June, we had our dear “Santiago” in the water- but it didn’t happen immediately!

This guy had a lot of parts in him that we worked on, week by week. First, there was always a lot of wiring to be done, and constantly more being added after these pictures were taken:

Honestly, I’m surprised it all fit.

This tubular electronics can was a very well done piece by my friend Jesse, who is pictured next. He made it from laser cut acrylic, I think. He is really humble, but he is definitely an excellent mechanical engineer.

In the above photo, we have a different plate on the front with a bike nozzle (Schrader valve for you bike people). This allowed us to “bubble test” our bot- a common term for when you pressurize the inside, then spray the bot with soap. Any leaks will make themselves knows with bubbles, hence the name. Lisa and Kyle Kruse can be seen performing the test here:

Throughout the year, a lot of tests were required in different ways, but it was all pretty fun. Santiago even got to go swimming for a break during finals week!

After that, it really came down to the international competition in Canada. On his journey, our bot Santiago had to make it through a few flights…

The competition was fun, really exciting, and overall a great learning experience. We got to talk to 30 other teams from around the globe, and play “show and tell” with each other. We nerded out on each other’s bots, and everyone was extremely friendly and (almost) as excited to be there as we were! Overall, I had a really great time.

For next year, we have a lot of new ideas to implement, and I’m really excited to see how things go!

Thanks for reading!
